BALVANT PAREKH CENTRE FOR GENERAL SEMANTICS AND OTHER HUMAN SCIENCES

Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences was set up on March 15, 2009 in Baroda with the generous support provided by Shri Balvant Parekh, who was then the Chairman of Pidilite Industries, Mumbai and his family. The Centre is registered as a charitable trust under the provisions of Bombay Public Trusts Act of 1950 and administered by a Board of Trust with members from diverse background and experience.

Balvant Parekh Centre’s aims and objectives are to promote the study of general semantics and other human sciences in India. The Centre houses a library and reading room, a conference hall, a seminar room, and an administrative office. It shares these facilities with the Centre for Contemporary Theory, which is also involved in academic activities of inter-disciplinary nature. Both Centres work together in close proximity and cooperation and complement each other through their programs.

About Balvantray Kalyanji Parekh

Balvant Parekh was one of the first-generation entrepreneurs of post-independence India, who contributed to strengthening the economic condition after independence.

Balvantray Kalyanji Parekh (1925 – 25 January 2013) was an Indian entrepreneur and founder of Pidilite Industries. He was known as “India’s Fevicol Man”. Balvant was born in a Jain family in Mahuva town of Bhavnagar district Gujarat India.

Balvant had provided support in starting an Arts and Science college in Mahua Gujarat India. He donated INR 20 million for Bhavnagar’s Science city project and also donated to Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. In 2009 Balvant founded Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences in Baroda Gujarat India.

The Centre caters to not only academicians, but people from diverse fields of life. Instead of promoting ivory tower intellectualism, the Centre has the potential through its plan of action to go to the midst of people and let ideas seep into their minds. This Centre is not established for converting people to general semantics. Ideas can be disseminated, people can meet, interact and exchange views, new possibilities and visions of life can be introduced to people who live cloistered lives. New outlooks and better ways of coping with life would emerge.

What is General Semantics?

General semantics is a discipline and/or methodology intended to improve the ways people interact with their environment and with one another, especially through training in the critical use of words and other symbols.

Although General Semantics is not a philosophical system in the strict sense of the term, it takes issue with Aristotle’s syllogistic logic of correspondence, and makes a case for a non-Aristotelian semantic cartography which implies that the word is not the thing described, and “the map is not the territory.”  This deconstructive method proposed by Alfred Korzybski to overcome an ancient wisdom paves the way for a pragmatic approach toward social understanding based upon the principle that in a symbolic system of communication multiple avenues are open for human beings to connect with the world. In Korzybski’s work, General Semantics is synonymous with a general theory of evaluation.

Why General Semantics?

An avid reader of works pertaining to general semantics and other related areas, Shri Balvant K. Parekh believed that by establishing a Centre dedicated to the study of the subject, he will be able to facilitate a process for spreading the awareness of the benefits of general semantics among the people in India. Mr. Parekh believed that the methods of General Semantics have the potential to lessen their social and personal anxieties (चिंता) and enable them to minimize conflicts and misevaluations. He himself had profited a lot from the insights drawn from his reading this subject, and therefore wanted to share such benefits among others. His social vision and philosophy are based upon this ethics of sharing.

Why Human Sciences?

This optimistic note germane to the philosophy and method of general semantics serves as a pointer to its future development within the broad range of concerns of the discipline of the human sciences. The primary concern of the human sciences is to open up the possibility for a human being to come to terms with her/ his world and to achieve the fullness of being through application of scientific method of understanding of what Martin Heidegger calls “being-in-the world.” It is clear from this “mapping” of the “territory” that encompasses more that it promised initially that general semantics and the human sciences are epistemically related, reinforcing each other in a productive way; hence the justification for conflating general semantics with the human sciences.

Anekaant: A Journal of Polysemic Thought (ISSN: 2320-6195) is a refereed international journal published by Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences. Anekaant started as an annual Journal in March 2013. We have started bringing it out twice a year (Autumn and Spring) since 2016. Anekaant’s objective is to engage with ideas emanating from the discipline of General Semantics, and from other disciplines under the broad rubric of the human sciences. As the human sciences include several areas of thought and their application, the range of the Journal’s coverage is both open-ended and inclusive. It provides a forum for a dialogue among both scholars and non-scholars on topics of contemporary relevance that have some bearing on our everyday reality. Articles submitted for possible publication in the Journal must be written in a style devoid of academic jargon so that they are easily intelligible to general readers. It will also have a book-review section, where books related to the areas of the Journal’s concerns will be discussed.

Fellowships and Potential Scholarly Affiliations

Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences has instituted research fellowships and grants for doing study and research in General Semantics and other allied areas. Those who are doing M. Phil. and doctoral research, or writing books, research papers, or monographs, books or preparing study material for courses are welcome to apply for the grant by sending detailed proposals any time during the year. The grant may include a fellowship at the Centre for a short-term duration of one month, or a long-term duration of three months; or visit to a resource centre in or outside India for collection of material for a research project. Those who are accepted for receiving the grant will be paid for their travel by train and a monthly allowance of Rs.25,000/ (Twenty five thousand) for visiting the Centre in Baroda. In special cases, proposals to visit overseas archives for collecting material for book writing projects may be considered. We accept proposals throughout the year.
